Mostly everyone I meet doesn't like their job
In January 2017 I was invited to Cape Town, South Africa. About halfway through my trip, I cancelled my return flight. I then spent the rest of the year traveling the world via one-way flights.
That was almost 2 years ago. I've been living and working from 25+ countries since. Along the way, I've met hundreds of people from all types of backgrounds.
The one question I often ask new people I meet is: do you like what you do? About 9 out of 10 times, the answer is negative.
Now, this post isn't a clever way to introduce you to working for yourself (entrepreneurship). I think you can be very happy working for someone else. What it all comes down to is doing what something you enjoy.
Some people call this finding your passion. That's a fluffy way of putting it. What you do for work doesn't have to be something you're passionate about. What's more important is it's something you get pleasure from.
For me, it's writing. I don't know why, but I like to write. I'm far from the best writer and I often look at what I wrote last week with a bit of disgust. On that same note, I sometimes see something I wrote in the past and think, "Wow... that's not bad! I wrote this?"
Either way, for better or worse, I enjoy the process. Copywriting fun for me. I often tell people if I had an infinite amount of money, I'd still write copy. There's just something about the process that stimulates my mind in the right way.
This may sound woo-woo, but I hope other people find what it is they enjoy, too. I understand what it's like to work a job that doesn't make you happy. I've worked at least 10 jobs before I became a copywriter. While I was as happy as I could possibly be during that time in my life, none of those jobs satisfied me.
The more I travel, the more I see people living like I once did. They drag themselves to work, numb themselves throughout the day, and anxiously await their weekend.
Life doesn't have to be that way. There are options. You have choices. Without knowing you, I cannot say much more. But just trust me about this, doing something you enjoy as work will change your life — in the best way possible.
